Final Fantasy Resonance is the classic-style JRPG Final Fantasy spin-off from Square Enix, and it repurposes a pretty cool concept from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the free-to-play mobile game it was based on — Visions. In FFBE, Visions were characters from other parts of the Final Fantasy franchise that you could summon to fight alongside the party, but Resonance takes a different approach.
Instead, we can think of FF Resonance Visions as previous characters lending a little of their experience to the Resonance cast and acting as a job system. This is a pretty cool idea, and it means that there are dozens of cool opportunities to include the wisdom and experience of characters from across the Final Fantasy multiverse. These ten characters are the ones I think would make fantastic Visions — including characters who made it into Brave Exvius spinoff but could get a different approach here!
10 Vincent Valentine
Embracing the Darkness
Vincent Valentine was a very interesting character across the Final Fantasy VII games, but I don’t think it would be that fun to simply transplant his transformation mechanic into Final Fantasy Resonance. That could work and offer some fun gameplay, but I don’t think it’s necessary.
Instead, I think Vincent’s Vision could offer access to ranged abilities or temporary power-ups that are distinct from the standard buff system. Vincent’s Vision should be selfish, but it should also offer powerful tools. Maybe even Dark-element abilities. To be honest, I just think Vincent is kind of cool. There are rumors he’s getting a Revelations DLC, but I’d be happy with a Vision in Resonance.
9 Balthier
The Leading Man Takes Aim
The self-proclaimed leading man of Final Fantasy XII surely deserves at least an ensemble role in Final Fantasy Resonance! Balthier is the perfect example of a secondary character who’s actually the protagonist of an entirely different story. He wouldn’t be able to take center stage in Resonance, either, but that’s okay — he’s used to it.
Balthier doesn’t need to be just another gun-based ranged Vision, although he could do that really well. He could function well as a breaker, helping to build stagger and then unleash powerful attacks during the stagger window. His toolkit could include passives that increase ranged damage or stagger and rapid-fire multi-hit attacks.
8 Yuna
Let's Go, Girls
From the moment she appeared in Final Fantasy X, Yuna was absolutely iconic. Her journey across FFX and its sequel, FFX-2, was amazing to watch. I think she could provide a very interesting approach in Final Fantasy Resonance. She could easily occupy a role as a healer-type Vision, and she could also provide summoning abilities.
These would be the most obvious directions for her, but I think it would be pretty cool if a potential Resonance Vision went for the Gunner angle from X-2. Yuna’s Vision could be a fast-paced, multi-hit ranged attacker. It’s not as recognizable as her classic FFX look and theme, but I really loved the new approach, and I think it could work well in Resonance and memorialize a different part of Yuna's legacy. She got into Brave Exvius three separate times, but they could probably stop at one for Resonance.
7 Beatrix
The Legendary General
Beatrix is an iconic Final Fantasy IX character with a memorable toolkit and identity. In Final Fantasy Resonance, she could offer powerful finisher moves and passives designed to fully press the advantage. In FFIX, Beatrix was an absolute menace in her scripted battles, featuring powerful moves designed to completely shred your party’s HP and ability to fight back.
A Beatrix Vision could translate this into FF Resonance’s battle system, offering powerful abilities and passives that support them. Her Vision could be all about capitalizing on enemy weaknesses and stagger to provide decisive finishing moves. Her Brave Exvius appearance was based on her player-controlled sequence in FFIX, but I think her appearance as an enemy is just as interesting.
6 Edgar Roni Figaro
The Man With The Tools
Final Fantasy VI’s Edgar is a master engineer, and I think his Vision could bring some of that versatile flavor to Final Fantasy Resonance. He’d be kind of a jack of all trades Vision, offering a suite of flexible and versatile abilities and passives based on the FF6 Tools command. That's basically how they implemented him in FFBE, and I think it could still work well in Resonance.
Each one could serve a different purpose in battle, from support and utility to damage and stagger. He doesn’t have to be the most obviously powerful Vision, but I think his Vision could be a good option for players who don’t mind sacrificing raw power and damage output for a more flexible approach. And he’s also pretty cool.
5 Celes Chere
A Different Kind of Tank
Celes is a really popular character, so I don’t think many fans would be too upset by having her in-game somehow, but outside of that I think she has a lot to add. Final Fantasy Resonance already has a bunch of defensive Visions, but I think Celes could offer something a little bit different.
She doesn’t need to offer a standard physical defensive toolkit. Instead, I think it would be really impactful if Celes focused on being a magic tank. Celes could offer spell absorption, reflect mechanics, magic defense boosts, or a taunt specifically for magic. There’s a lot of scope for something different and useful from a Celes Vision.
4 Torgal
The Best Boy
Who doesn’t like Final Fantasy XVI’s Torgal? You can even pet the dog! I think Torgal is an interesting option for a support or sabotage-oriented Vision that rewards character, action, and turn-order synergies.
The classic turn-based combat system is perfect for a Vision that rewards strategic thinking and follow up actions, and I think translating Torgal into this sort of system is exactly the kind of interesting choice that would reference the character well while also adapting it for use in Resonance’s unique system. Failing that, I’d probably just be happy if Fina gets a Fenrir Esper — I do like a good video game dog!
3 Vivi Ornitier
Not Your Typical Black Mage
Vivi is one of my all-time favorite Final Fantasy characters, so I admit I’m extremely biased here. Final Fantasy Resonance already has a bunch of magic-based Visions, so what would Vivi really add? He was a Black Mage in Brave Exvius, after all.
I think it would be interesting if Resonance used his special interaction with Steiner in Final Fantasy IX instead. In FFIX, having Vivi and Steiner together in the party unlocks Steiner’s Sword Magic skills. This Vision could provide elemental effects to the equipped character’s physical skills, or it could even function similarly to FFIX, where the character can apply effects to allies’ skills instead. Whatever the actual implementation, I certainly wouldn’t say no to more Vivi!
2 Quistis Trepe
Trepies Unite
Quistis Trepe is Final Fantasy VIII’s Blue Magic or Enemy Skills user, and I think this is an interesting approach that they could use for her Vision in Final Fantasy Resonance. I don’t know if there’s any appetite for introducing an actual blue magic system to Resonance, but even if there isn’t, a Quistis Vision could implement something that looks and feels like one.
Just by including iconic monster abilities as abilities offered by the Vision, fans could enjoy classic Final Fantasy experiences like casting iconic monster skills like 1000 Missiles without it necessarily needing to come from a dedicated blue magic system. Although a Blue Magic system would be pretty fun. Quistis was a special reward unit in Brave Exvius, although I'm thinking of her more as a standard Vision here.
1 Rikku
Let's Mix It Up
Rikku could offer Final Fantasy Resonance a brand-new system using her Mix Overdrive from FFX. Instead of teaching a bunch of battle abilities or support skills, Rikku’s Vision could let characters learn Mix recipes to create all sorts of items to use in battle. It's an ambitious Vision that introduces a new battle mechanic, so I can understand why it wouldn't necessarily happen.
But I loved using Mix in FFX, and while this wouldn’t be as deep a system, a Rikku Vision could let Resonance characters provide flexible support, healing, and damage options based on the Mix recipes they learn. It would be a jack-of-all-trades utility toolkit Vision, and a good way to use up some of the items that inevitably end up sitting in our inventory!
