After their special Patron supporters voted, GOG have placed the classic Nox into their Preservation Program with a fresh set of fixes. This comes shortly after GOG announced they're beginning to provide box art to make your own fancier backups.

What is Nox? Released originally in the year 2000, it had an interesting mixture of character classes and gameplay differences between them, along with a multiplayer mode that made it quite well received back in the day. It was often compared with the original Diablo too.

In the news post GOG said:

"This release strips out the outdated compatibility shim entirely, closing off a recurring source of conflicts on its own. Separately, it adds the GOG DXWrapper, so Nox can actually display properly on modern machines. It also adds a custom widescreen resolution, selectable directly from the game's options menu. The original installer used to tell a bit of Nox's lore partway through setup – we've archived that segment as a downloadable video, available in the Goodies section (not the full installer, just this piece of it). We've validated stability and verified compatibility with both Windows 10 and 11.

One of the biggest additions comes from bringing back a feature many assumed was gone for good, allowing for online multiplayer through XWIS.net servers. Previous GOG releases never included Westwood Online Service (WOL) support in the first place, so there was nothing on our end to make that connection happen. With WOL dependencies restored, along with the correct registry entries, the GOG version of Nox can now actually reach XWIS.net, ready for a new generation of players to duel it out."

GOG are now holding a third vote for their Patrons on what game will come next between: Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, The 11th Hour, Harvester, Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Comet, and The Legacy: Realm of Terror.

You can run GOG games on SteamOS / Linux with the likes of the Heroic Games Launcher. Eventually we should see GOG Galaxy arrive on Linux too.
