Speaking with Game, a spokesperson commented, “To clarify and avoid any misleading information: in that statement Dietmar anticipated an overall product volume decline by 10 percent, not a decline down to 10 percent.” They didn’t, however, offer comment as to what will happen beyond 2028.
Sony announced in July this year that it would be ending production of PlayStation game discs in January 2028, although titles due to launch on disc prior to that date and existing product will not be impacted. However, Sony’s disc manufacturing is kept in-house through DADC, unlike Microsoft, which uses Authorised Replicators to press Xbox discs under its publisher agreements.
The decision to scrap game discs on Sony’s part has been met with considerable backlash online. For example, during the company’s latest State of Play broadcast last week, the live comments section were packed with people posting ‘No Disc No Buy,’ and the same can be said for the Twitch broadcast, too.
Sony’s decision comes after digital sales for PlayStation titles have vastly eclipsed the performance of physical titles in recent years, with the COVID-19 pandemic in particular seeing a major spike in digital sales due to the fact people were unable to leave their homes in lockdown.
