Sega and Netflix have announced a package of three adaptations covering classic and upcoming games, as reported by Deadline and VGC.
The slate includes live-action feature films based on Crazy Taxi and Stranger Than Heaven, alongside a new animated Sonic the Hedgehog children's series.
The Crazy Taxi film is being written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the screenwriting duo behind the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun.
Producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film are attached alongside Sega head producer Toru Nakahara, the same producing team behind the live-action Sonic films.
What the Crazy Taxi Film Looks Like
The 1999 arcade game puts players behind the wheel of a fearless cabbie hurtling through chaotic city streets for fares. Parade reported that Moritz and Ascher described the film as being for anyone who played the original with the music cranked up on their Dreamcast.
A new instalment in the series, Crazy Taxi World Tour, is due for release next year, and the film is expected to follow that launch.
The franchise is well known for its punk-rock soundtrack. Sega has confirmed that songs from The Offspring and Bad Religion, including The Offspring's "All I Want" and Bad Religion's "Them and Us", are returning for World Tour.
Stranger Than Heaven Gets the Live-Action Treatment
The second film adaptation is based on Stranger Than Heaven, an upcoming action-adventure title from RGG Studio, the developer behind the Like a Dragon and Yakuza series.
Set in early 20th-century Japan, the game follows a foreigner who rises from poverty to become a feared yakuza and eventually an entertainment tycoon. Nakahara is producing the live-action feature.
Nakahara described the expected tone of the project as a badass action drama, in contrast to the comedic direction of the Crazy Taxi film.
New Sonic Series Targets Younger Viewers
The third project is an animated Sonic series developed with Carlos Stevens and Nakahara. Netflix describes it as targeting an upper preschool audience, aiming for a high-energy show that combines comedy with emotional grounding.
It follows the streamer's earlier Sonic Prime, which ran for three seasons.
Netflix VP of nonfiction and transmedia Brandon Riegg said the deal lets the streamer work across three distinct eras of Sega's catalogue, reaching existing fans alongside new audiences.
Sega COO Shuji Utsumi said the company had watched Netflix bring real craft to different formats, and that the fanbases of these games deserve adaptations that honour what makes each title special.
Sega's Broader Adaptation Push
This Netflix deal sits within a wider push by Sega to bring its properties to screens. The company is separately developing a live-action Streets of Rage film and has signed adaptation deals for Comix Zone and Space Channel 5, among others.
